Emergency Family Assistance Association

EFAA, Emergency Family Assistance Association, exists to meet basic needs and promote financial stability and self-sufficiency for families with children, whose needs cannot adequately be met by other means.  EFAA maintains three emergency shelters, a transitional housing program, two basic needs offices and a food bank to serve families in need in Boulder and Broomfield counties.  To find out more about EFAA, visit www.efaa.org.

Boulder Mennonite Church (BMC) supports EFAA in various ways and has been an active partner in helping to build a better future for families in crisis in the Boulder area.  Currently BMC is kicking off another fall food drive, in which we are collecting food to help stock the food bank at EFAA.  BMC has done regular food drives for EFAA in the past, and has sometimes combined with others in the community to build awareness of the need for food for EFAA.

One of Boulder Mennonite’s current Small Groups provides ongoing support to EFAA by being a sponsor for a unit at the N. Carr Shelter in Lafayette.  The group provides household items on a regular basis, such as shampoo, detergent, paper towels, etc. so the family can save their money while at the shelter instead of having to buy these things.  The small group has also done projects at the shelter, including painting the unit inside and working on a landscaping project outside.  Right now the group is collecting donations of sheets and blankets (any size) for the families that will be staying there this winter.

Boulder Mennonite has also been involved with EFAA’s shelter program in the past.  In the late 90s a former Small Group from BMC started planning some activities for the children staying at the Atwood Shelter in Longmont.  The group volunteered to continue to do activities for children on a regular basis for awhile.  The small group then partnered with EFAA to secure grants that would fund a Children’s Caseworker position, which then started in 2000.  Ever since, there has been a staff person in this position half-time.  This program works to ensure children’s needs are met while they are staying at the shelter and hopes to minimize the negative impact of homelessness on children.
